You suddenly disappeared into invisibility, and that took us all by surprise.
\nAt 11:00 on Tuesday morning, I exchanged a friendly text message with you.
\nYou told me we’d be seeing you again soon at La Gendronni\u00e8re.
\nOn Tuesday evening, your light was blown out by impermanence,
\nlike a candle swept away by a sudden gust of wind.
\nIf that’s your rather abrupt way of teaching us about impermanence,
\nyou who would have had great difficulty explaining it to us in words,
\nwell, you’ve succeeded.<\/p>\n
Radical as well as spontaneous.
\nThere will always be someone like you to provoke us
\nand make us think about life, suffering and inequality.<\/p>\n
I met you at La Gendronni\u00e8re in ’92.
\nYou were a good companion on the Way.
\nAt the time, we were swamped with major roadworks and upgrades.
\nYou drove the tractor through the forest, as wild as it was,
\na gruff companion to disturb the over-mannered spirits
\nand prune superfluous reverence.
\nSometimes lost in the fog of your thoughts,
\nor tinkering with useless things, walking in the hills,
\nyou’ve never stopped letting your creativity flow,
\na bit of a tramp, a bit of a genius,
\na provocateur with an eye for the stars as much as for the battle of ideas.
\nAfter our adventure in Lanau, you had just retired
\nand you were still full of projects, interests, dreams and perspectives.<\/p>\n
And now it’s all fading away so that at last, rather than as expected,
\ncomes the time for rest, silence and non-action,
\nSo don’t stop at death, and keep going,
\nsitting up straight, motionless in your new space of light
\nletting yourself be absorbed by the silence.
\nIn any case, it’s always straight ahead.
\nAnd don’t worry!<\/p>\n
Each of us also goes towards our death, which awaits us a little further on.
\nWe never leave each other, with or without this ephemeral body,
\nin which the truth of being is revealed.
\nDeath does not extinguish the silent and eternal Presence.
\nIt does not extinguish what we have experienced together.
\nIt does not extinguish your smiling face that returns to our minds
\nevery time we think of you.
\nDeath does not extinguish anything.
\nWe never stop seeing each other in spirit.
\nWe share everything there.<\/p>\n
Our hearts go out to your two boys and their mother,
\nto all those you have loved, who have accompanied you and who have shared
\nyour joys and your sorrows.
\nWe are overwhelmed by sadness.<\/p>\n
Let it resonate just for you, today, in our mouths,
\nthe sutra of Great Wisdom.
\nYou join her in the sad sweetness of our friendship.
\nMay our song encourage all the Buddhas to come and take part in our ceremony.
\nYou are already one of them for immeasurable periods of time.
\nWe wish you a safe journey to Nirvana.<\/p>\n

\nToday, for you, Fabien, the causes and conditions of existence have come to an end.
\nWe understand the impermanence of all things,
\nand that this death signifies entry into Nirvana.
\nIn front of this coffin, we invite all his family, friends and loved ones
\nto offer this ceremony to the glory of all the Buddhas and all enlightened beings.
