DESCRIPTION:First Zen Meditation Retreat – Temple Zen La Gendronnière – with Guy Mokuho Mercier\n13 – 17 May\, 2026\nZen meditation retreat (sesshin) for people who are beginners in Zen practice. It will be led by Master Guy Mokuhô Mercier at the Temple of La Gendronnière from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 May 2026 (arrival on Thursday 15 May in the late afternoon). \nAn introduction to the practice will be offered to beginners on the evening of their arrival. \nTaking part in a sesshin is the best way for those who wish to explore the Zen path within a Buddhist monastery. This progressive experience will allow you to attend daily teachings and engage in enriching exchanges with senior members of the tradition. \nYou will immerse yourself in the values of community life and take part in the emblematic ceremonies and rituals of this age-old tradition. \nThe days are structured around four periods of zazen. The temple provides zafus (meditation cushions) and meditation benches. SUMMARY:Sesshin in England - Crosby Hall with Mokuho Guy Mercier
DESCRIPTION:This will be a week-long sesshin at Crosby Hall\, Liverpool to be led by Senior Teacher Mokuhō Guy Mercier\nThis will be a 6-day sesshin\, in the Soto Zen tradition\, including a Jukai ceremony; the giving and receiving of precepts. This means to take refuge in the three treasures: Buddha\, Dharma and Sangha. The Friends of IZAUK Annual General Meeting will take place during this week. \nAbout the teacher\nGuy Mercier received monk ordination from Master Deshimaru in 1976 and has actively participated in the life of the Sangha ever since. He has organised and led many Sesshins and summer camps\, and served as Tenzo at La Gendronniere for many years. In 2004\, he founded the Tenborin Association\, which brings together members of his Sangha from across Europe. In 2008\, he received dharma transmission from Sojun Matsuno Roshi. From 2012 until 2023\, he managed a Zen Centre in the south of France\, and in 2024\, he became the current Abbot of La Gendronnière Zen Temple\, the head temple of our greater organisation\, located in the Loire Valley in France. \nSesshin Details\nArrival: Friday 22nd May\, 2026 from 4:30PM – dinner will be around 8pm\nDeparture: Thursday 28tht May after 3pm (please plan to help with clean up) \nVenue: Crosby Hall Educational Trust Centre\, Back Lane\, Little Crosby\, Liverpool L23 4UA \nClick to open Crosby Hall on Google Maps \nHow To Get there by train: It’s a short walk from Liverpool Lime Street Station to Liverpool Central Station. Take the Southport train (every 15 minutes) to Blundellsands & Crosby Station and then a two-mile taxi ride or half hour easy walk across fields to the CHET Centre. (DELTA Taxis\, Crosby: 0151 924 7373) \nWhat to Bring\nBring loose\, dark clothes for zazen plus a zafu and zafuton if you have them. DESCRIPTION:Summer Session – at la Gendronniere Zen Temple – directed by Guy Mokuho – from 6th – 14th July\, 2026\nArrival: Sunday 5 July at the end of the day\nDuring this session\, in addition to the practice of zazen\, there will be teachings on the foundations of Buddhism (what samsara is and dependent co-arising; how the functioning of the “illusory self” perpetuates the world of suffering; how to bring it to an end for the benefit of all beings\, etc.). Several mondos (question-and-answer sessions) will be offered. \nProgram for children aged 6 to 14 \nWe will welcome children accompanied by at least one of their parents. A program of activities will be prepared by the people supervising the children’s group\, who will call on parents for help if needed.
